winter haiku

cheeky mockingbird
looks up from lunch
eavesdrops

when I first came to Maine
the mockingbirds were not here
then, as the climate changed,
they started coming in March and
leaving in the fall
for the past five years, I have been
seeing them here in town, and even in the city of Portland
this,I make noise, clicking sounds or just talking
on this day
he was lunching on rose hips when I got  to the mailbox
my neighbor came to the box and as we talked the mockingbird
appeared to be listening
so funny!

  1. It is interesting getting to know birds. Seeing them in different seasons and simply wondering about them. Lovely photo.

    1. Mockingbirds are almost as nosy as chickadees. This one is used to me, we meet up often. He definitely was more interested in what I was doing than lunch.

    1. He was craning his head around to listen. You would be surprised at how many animals and birds learn what a camera is really fast. Even dragonflies pose!

    1. Thank you, Caroline! Not only are they bossy, they seem to enjoy interacting with people. Stop by anytime.

    1. Thanks! I got another shot of him today when I went to post a letter. Some robins stopped in the yard early this morning, but didn't get a shot of them.

    1. He is on the rose bush every afternoon when I go for the mail. I am sure he is aware of how good looking he is.

    1. Thanks Christine. Mockingbirds are pretty, but can be a pain. They are very territorial, and can be pushy, even to humans.

On the other hand, their night songs can be quite beautiful. They also sing before a rain. I think I wrote a haiku about that a few years ago.
